Individual Paper

Assalamualaikum everyone, my name is Nur Sakinah Binti Mohammed Alam. My matric number is 2315056. I am writing this to complete my assessment for the class coded SCSH 1201.

As we all know, there are lots of changes that we can do to preserve the environment. For instance, using reusable coffee mugs or taking meat off the menu. In this society, as in Malaysia, there are lots of problems regarding our efforts to save the nature. Speaking of which, Malaysians are mostly involved in traffics. Most Malaysians have their own vehicle to move around easily. Unfortunately, Malaysia became the fourth-worst country in Southeast Asia in terms of traffic congestion. This also caused Malaysia holding the second-highest level of CO2 emissions.

Not only that traffic congestion causes air pollution, it also eats up our time on the road. According to the Tom Tom traffic index, driving 20 kilometers to and from work during peak hours takes an average of 1 hour and 26 seconds. In a year, workers in Kuala Lumpur spent 333 hours on the road, of which 162 hours were lost to congestion. Due to those long hours, how bad it must have been the atmosphere. According to the EPA, the typical passenger vehicle spits out an estimated 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

For that, we have to work together, shoulder by shoulder, to help decreasing the amount of gas emission. Instead of driving, why not just walk or go cycling? This might be weird and hard at first, but once we start, it will be easy and enjoyable. Perhaps, some of us might be unable to do that, so I might suggest taking public transportation. The fare for public transportation might be less than the cost of fuel of our own vehicle. In addition, 'MyRapid' has the product called My50, which is a pass of RM50 for 30 days of unlimited travel. There is also concession card for disabled passengers, students and senior citizens that decreases the fare to 50%.

Apart from that, some of us only go out to one place at a time. Within that short time, we contribute gas emission to the planet. How cruel can we be? As for this, we should consider sharing vehicle with another person having the same purpose. It might be our family members or our neighbours. Not only that we care for the nature, but we also strengthen our relationship with people around us. We may also rent a car and go somewhere together with limited number of vehicles as possible. This reduces the time of traffic congestion apart from saving the atmosphere from gas emission.

In conclusion, I think that this issue is important as it determines the future of our country. The number of vehicles in Malaysia is increasing year by year, how would it be in the next 10 to 20 years if we don't take any action? Moreover, the space becomes more limited which leads to expansions of buildings that causes trees being cut down. We should practice going car-free as it helps the land being safer and cleaner. I believe that most of us are trying to reduce the pollution in our own possible ways.
